GYPSUM

Product Type: Granular Soil Amendment

Gypsum is recommended product for managing sodic soils. A high concentration of sodium attracts water towards clay sites attached with sodium salts. This reduces water permeability by locking it on these lay sites. This ultimately results in waterlogging, surface crusting, and poor soil conditions. Calcium in gypsum replaces sodium that is bound to receptors found in clay. The sodium then binds to the sulphates found in gypsum and is washed out of the soil. This allows the soil to maintain healthy moisture levels while crops have better access to the available water. The improved aggregation and water penetration also prevent crusting of the soil surface and erosion from water runoff. It also improves nutrient usage by the plants and act as a buffer to correct both acidic and alkaline soils. Overall, it provides a healthier soil growth environment.

Suggested Application Rates & Method

  • To use gypsum as a soil amendment in small garden, spread it over soil at a rate of about 10 to 15 pounds per 100 square feet of soil surface using a garden spreader or by gloved hand, then till it into the top 6 to 8 inches of soil.
  • A typical rate at which gypsum is applied as a calcium fertiliser where the pH does not need amending is 1 – 2.5 t/ha. This would normally be applied during the fallow period and can remain effective for several years.
  • Use in accordance with the recommendations of a qualified individual or institution or according to an approved nutrient management plan. Product may be used to correct calcium and sulphur deficiencies and soil salinity problems.
